Special Sections Art Direction & Editorial Design

Willamette Week’s Special Sections are perfect-bound magazines that go in-depth into various aspects of Portland’s culture, including topics like Northwest travel, food and beer, weed, and the iconic Finder Portland guidebook.

I designed and art-directed seven full-length magazines. Along with all of the editorial design, I also wrote creative briefs for photographers and illustrators, often working alongside photographers in the studio or on-site at shoots. I managed timelines for staff writers to adhere to a rigorous production and publishing schedule.

While working on the Special Sections, I also supported on the design, art direction, and layout of the weekly newspaper, maintaining several ongoing projects at one time. Weekly paper duties included page design, attending editorial meetings, and coordinating with section editors, copy-editors, advertisers, contributors, the publisher, and the printing press.
