Special Sections Art Direction & Editorial Design

Willamette Week’s “Special Sections” are perfect-bound magazines that go in-depth into various aspects of Portland’s culture, including topics like Northwest travel, food and beer, weed, and the iconic Finder Portland guidebook.

While working at Willamette Week, I designed and art-directed 7 full-length magazines, including writing creative briefs for photographers and illustrators and often working alongside photographers in the studio or on-site at shoots. I managed timelines for staff writers, adhering to a rigorous production and publishing schedule. Press runs of these magazines numbered in the thousands.

While working as Special Sections Art Director, I also supported on the design, art direction, and layout of the weekly newspaper, maintaining several ongoing projects at one time. Weekly paper duties included page design, attending weekly editorial meetings, and coordinating with section editors, copy-editors, advertisers, contributors, the publisher, and the press.
