WIRED

Art Direction & Commissions

As a freelance art director at WIRED, I researched illustrators and pitched talent to the creative team. After deciding the illustrator whose work was a fit for the brief, I contacted artists and guided them through their editorial assignment. This included writing creative briefs, reviewing sketches and drafts, and managing delivery and publishing timelines.

Editorial Design & Illustration

At WIRED I designed print features for the magazine and supported illustration needs for web articles and social media.

I designed multi-page feature articles in WIRED’s print magazine. I pitched layout concepts after reading early drafts of the articles, working with in-progress article copy. I created handmade graphic assets like stencil drop caps and spray paint elements in Defusing the Carbon Bomb. The layouts mesh with WIRED’s established visual style while creating a new and unique feel for each story.

Web and social illustrations ranged from light-hearted illustrations to serious breaking news. These illustrations were often completed within the day that they were assigned, in keeping with the publisher’s fast-paced schedule.
